Welcome to Shantigar
Red Gate Davenport copy.jpg
Thank you

We are grateful for the Shantigar community.

After the passing of our founder Jean-Claude van Itallie in 2021, we closed our doors to reflect and imagine possible futures, then reopened the red gate and renewed our commitment to this peaceful home. The past year has been fruitful. Shantigar continues to be sanctuary and seedbed. We see a surge of vitality, planting new ideas in the rich soil of Jean-Claude’s vision:

Joining meditative and artistic practices with the healing power of nature,

we can live more peacefully on our planet.

We’re inspired by Shantigar’s workshop leaders—theatre artists, painters, dancers, yoginis, writers, filmmakers, spiritual guides, and outdoor adventurers, all bringing ample gifts and open hearts.

We celebrate our workshop participants and visitors. We’ve hosted Chi Kung practitioners and Continuum movement teachers; media students from community college; women dedicated to yoga, wellness, and sobriety; singers and improvisational players; plein air painters and apple growers; people hunting for mushrooms and others seeking authentic urban-rural connection.

Many thanks to our team members who care for the farmhouse, prepare delicious meals, steward the land, design our mailings and website, and organize our workshops. We’re grateful to collaborate with people who share Shantigar’s values and bring zest and imagination to the work.

As we all know, when two or more gather, a deeper magic can happen. Shantigar offered an elegant context for our gathering, the perfect container for the work we needed to do for ourselves and with each other, with time and space for self-reflection. Abundant wildlife, forests, meadows, creeks, pond, and trails provided a rich container and a deep resonance with nature.

Shantigar is a place where we breathe deeply and connect to each other.
Where we dive into creative play and meditative practice.
Where we unwind and build resilience in glorious green spaces.
Where we pollinate new ideas and ways of being.

Please join us at Shantigar in 2024.

House Repairs

We appreciate your donations. In 2024, we have two priorities: repairing our farmhouse and launching the Jean-Claude van Itallie Scholarship Fund to help more people attend Shantigar workshops. Let us know your choice. Thank you!

Shantigar's Mission

To engage with the world from a more profound place through transformative workshops, retreats and performances.

Joining meditative and artistic practices with the healing power of nature, we can live more peacefully on our planet.
