About AiP

Adventures in Preservation was founded in 2001 by two women with a great love of historic buildings and a strong desire to travel and understand the world.

AiP envisions a world where people use, understand, and appreciate historic buildings that are vital to economic and environmental sustainability and preserve cultural identity.

Our Impact

Adventures in Preservation remains engaged in creating social impact through historic preservation. The visible impact of our work is seen in both the conservation of valuable historic architecture and one-on-one instruction for project participants from preservation experts. Importantly, our true value is even broader given the compelling connection between heritage conservation and climate change.

DID YOU KNOW THAT REUSING AN EXISTING BUILDING CAN ACTUALLY HELP AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY REDUCE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT?

PROJECTS

Our heritage preservation volunteer projects offer a compelling combination of travel, education, and adventure, topped with a healthy dose of cultural and architectural heritage conservation and respect for the environment. It’s fun, sustainable tourism!

Our Projects

Preservation is a powerful tool for change! We are passionate about saving historic buildings and believe in the far-reaching benefits historic preservation provides. Our volunteers re-plaster, repoint, reglaze and repair by learning and using the traditional techniques of each region. Since 2001, we have worked to save both vernacular and unique historic buildings for integrated community use.

WE LOVE OUR JAMMERS!

Adventures in Preservation is about saving buildings, but it’s also about the people involved in their preservation. People willing to devote time and energy to preserving a building deserve to be more than mere “participants”, or “volunteers”. We needed a special name for our adventurous, hard-working travelers. In 2023 Jammers at Adventures in Preservation’s three project sites donated a total of 1,300 hours.

THE GLASSHOUSE PROJECT

One of AiP’s most successful projects took place at the Burgie Edwardian-era glasshouse in Scotland. Largely forgotten and in great disrepair, the 1912 greenhouse caught the interest of building conservation enthusiasts from the US, Canada, and Australia. Thanks to 21 incredible AiP Jammers, who didn't mind hard work, the central section of the Burgie Edwardian Glasshouse is now largely repaired and completely enclosed with glass panels. We returned in 2019 and successfully completed structural repair and glazing of the historic east room!
