Iowa Summer Writing Festival slideshow
Since 1987, the Iowa Summer Writing Festival has welcomed to the campus of The University of Iowa writers from 18 to 94 years of age, from all 50 states, and from every continent. Most of us come to the workshop table from other areas of expertise, other lives. These include law, journalism, parenthood, medicine, education, performance, diplomacy, social work, pastoral care, farming, and lollygagging. We come together across the genres and at every level of literary practice with a common purpose and in a common enterprise. We come as writers. This is the only assumption we make about you, whether you come to the Festival with the third draft of your novel, a message in a bottle, or a line you’ve written to yourself on your hand.

The Festival is proud to belong to Iowa City—a UNESCO City of Literature and the first American City of Literature in the Creative Cities Network. Iowa City has long been a haven for writers, and The University of Iowa our ancestral home. It’s a long conversation we’ve been having here.

We invite you to pull up a chair.

"I could write many pages to convey my gratitude and excitement, but I would have to give you too much background information. So let’s say I felt I had finally landed on a planet I had been looking for in all my travels." Inés Garland, Buenos Aires, Argentina

"I think I may have finally found my form." Rose Solomon, Columbus, Ohio
